Fixed a bug

April 24th, 2005

Today while reading this post on slashdot I figured out why in IE the body section of my site wouldn’t resize correctly. The main body section is supposed to be around 975 pixels to make the links on the left side of the page look correct. Well apparently IE doesn’t know how to handle the min-height property if its not related to a table, so for IE instead of min-height: 975px; in my style sheet, I needed to add _height: 975px; in the correct spot. If any browser but IE accesses my page, it’ll ignore the _height property and use the proper min-height property. If IE accesses the page it will parse the _height property instead of the min-height property. Long story short, the links section displays correctly in firefox and IE. Anway, IE7 should support png’s properly now and hopefully be more css complient to make life easier for web designers. Later.

Progress has been Made

March 9th, 2005

Today I made quite a bit of progress on this blog. After spending the past couple days reading up on XHTML and CSS I have a much better understanding of how it all works and fixed the problems I was having earlier in the week. Most of it had to do with where I was adding comments in my html file. These comments are related to the theme plugin for blosxom. At any rate, those problems are behind me now. Tomorrow I need to finish the Catagories and Archives section. They will actually be in a sidebar to the left of the main blogging area. For some reason my site can’t be seen from the web. My internet went out for a short while tonight, but came back within ten minutes. That may or may not have something to do with it. After I get the links section up and working/looking the way I want it to, I want to make it easier to make it easier to post to the blog. Currently with blosxom you just create a regular text file and place that file in a folder on your webserver. No messing around with a database which is fine by me. I’ve seen a few plugins and have tested a couple of them. There is also a plugin where you can email your blog post in to blosxom, so I may or may not incorporate that into the blog. Only time will tell.

A large portion of my initial blogging will be devoted to the development of the site for my own personal amusement. I figure once I have the site finalized I will have some content worth checking up on, but that can wait until later. Goodnight.

Friday night I began to work on the background and have been tossing around different ideas all day regarding content layout and what not. For a while I couldnt come up with anything and then I got the bright idea to use the Mystery Machine from scooby doo as a template for my web page. The top half of the car could be the header and the bottom half would be the footer. Then I thought that might be kinda lame, so I scraped the idea in favor of my new design(more on this later).

The nice thing is that I’ve been designing my page to be XHTML/CSS 1.0 compliant. This means if I ever want to change the layout of my page all I have to do is create a new style sheet instead of rewriting all the html code. This is much easier than I thought it would be. Hope fully I’ll get the new site up by tomorrow night.

Today is the day that I consider meddlingBanter to be in official Beta mode. This of course is to somewhat mock Google’s policy of keeping every last service in beta until the end of time….or at least until Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are back in diapers muttering googlisms for the rest of their days. Seriously, why is everything over at Google in beta?  Maybe it’s to keep the Google hotness. You’re cool if you’re in BETA!! With that, I am now COOL. Some things I still need to do:

  • Finish the layout.
  • Add cool graphics so this blog is sexy.
  • Find a free DNS service for my domain (www.meddlingBanter.com).

As for what I will put on here. I think I’ll leave that up in the air right now. For the most part I just want to post articles about programs I like, technology, new tricks for old tasks and a personal entry or two. Take it easy people…
